People use tools every day to make their lives easier. You probably use a brush to clean your teeth and another brush to style your hair. A fork allows you to eat breakfast without getting your hands and fingers messy, and a scraper lets you clear ice from your car’s windshield.
What was the First Tool?
Early Stone Age Tools – Archeologists believe the first tools were pieces of stone, used by early humans over 2 million years ago. Flat stones were likely used for pounding objects, like the hammers we use today and sharp stones were used for cutting things including animal flesh.
Middle Stone Age Tools – About 200,000 years ago archeologists think that humans began making sharpened tools and other materials such as bones and wood to fashion more intricate tools for cutting, lifting, and moving objects.
Later Stone Age Tools – Humans began using antler and ivory to make arrow heads and needles.
Animals Use Tools
Humans are not the only ones who use tools. Elephants, Chimpanzees, Otters, and other animals use tools to accomplish tasks they can’t do as well without them. Interesting article here at LiveScience.com about 10 animals that use tools effectively.
